PRAYER,
FAITH AND COLLEGE
Prayer is a lot like faith. By using prayer to communicate with God,
you have to first accept that there is something beyond your physical
being, something greater than you that knows what you’ve done,
what you’ve thought, and what you’re going to do. What’s
more, prayer is also extremely personal, where you are able to let
go of your feelings and thoughts and speak to someone, knowing that
they’ll listen.
Over the past few years, I had been struggling with my faith. I was
always skeptical about God, never wanting to believe that I was not
in complete control over my actions and my life. For this reason alone,
I had decided to wait for a ‘big sign’ to hit me, before
I made my final decision as to what I believed. About five years later,
after already being in college for two, I was suddenly overwhelmed
with the realization that the ‘big sign’ I had been looking
for had already come; it just came disguised as many ‘coincidences’.
During my two years in college, I had gotten into some bad habits
that left my grades lower than expected, in trouble with the dean
of discipline, and worst of all having my parents not mad about any
of it, just thoroughly disappointed. When this realization hit me,
I reverted to prayer. I dropped my pride and prayed for help and a
sense of calmness in my life. At first I thought that the prayer was
just a way out, something that I could do to keep me focused on the
important things, but later I was able to see that my prayers were
being answered. I was able to pick myself back up and start over.
Although this is only one example, there have been countless experiences
before and after this where I now see that God was involved in my
life. Like I said, prayer is a lot like faith. When you realize that
one is important, you see the importance of the other also. Without
prayer I would have never found my faith and been able to accept God’s
offer to embrace and be embraced by him.
